How Effective Is Your Supply Chain Leadership Organization?
We hear continual concerns of degrading performance in supply chain operations. The comments we hear are:
- People just don’t want to work as hard as they used to
- We pay more to get lower performing people
We must remember that in most supply chain operations, PEOPLE are the most impactful asset we have. What they do and how they do it are the cornerstone of most operations.
We believe that operations leaders are there to teach, coach, empower and lead their teams to success. These actions build a culture of winning to the organization and allow us to utilize each person to their potential.
However, when we visit sites that are underperforming, we routinely see things like:
- Large spans of control for a leader – covering a lot of ground and people
- Lack of investment in the operational leaders – not teaching our leaders how to lead
We would encourage any operation to evaluate their view of the value of leaders and then invest accordingly. If you’ve ever made decisions to cut leaders OR cut leader training efforts to cut costs, we would encourage some honest discussion on the long-term impact.
